How to use the Sorter

The Sorter brings order to chaos. It reads the EXIF data embedded in every photo — date, camera, lens — and builds a clean, predictable folder structure automatically. No more dragging files by hand.

What the Sorter is

The Sorter is the first module you touch after a shoot. You drop a pile of photos onto it, and it moves every file into a folder structure based on the date the photo was taken, the camera that took it, and the file type. The result is a library you can navigate by year, event, and camera instead of a flat folder full of files.

It works entirely on EXIF data, so nothing is uploaded and nothing is guessed. Files without a usable capture date land in a clearly named unsorted/ folder rather than being misplaced.

What it is for

Manual sorting is the single most tedious part of photography. Thousands of files from a single wedding or trip have to be moved, renamed, and grouped — hours of repetitive clicking. The Sorter exists to remove that task entirely.

How it works

The Sorter reads the capture date, camera make and model, and file type from each file, then builds a structure like this:

2025/
  2025-06-15/
    Canon_EOS_R5/
      RAW/
      JPEG/

Pair detection keeps a RAW file and the JPEG with the same name together — and if the RAW file has no EXIF date of its own, it inherits the date from its JPEG partner. Smart Folders cluster shots that are close together in time into a single event, so a two-hour shoot becomes one tidy folder instead of a date.

Duplicate detection compares the visual fingerprint of each image and marks copies, so you can clean them up before they spread across your archive.

How to use it

  1. Drop photos onto the Sorter (or pick a folder).
  2. Choose a preset — standard, date + camera, or a custom rule set.
  3. Run the preview to check the planned structure.
  4. Click sort, and every file is moved into place.
  5. Changed your mind? Undo restores the last action.

The preview is a dry run — it shows exactly where each file will land before anything is moved, so you can adjust rules risk-free.

FAQ

What happens to photos without a date?

They are moved to an unsorted/ folder so nothing is lost or misplaced.

Do RAW and JPEG files stay together?

Yes. Pair detection keeps a RAW file with its same-named JPEG, and the RAW inherits the JPEG date if needed.

Can I see what will happen before sorting?

Yes. The preview is a dry run that shows the full planned structure before anything moves.

Can I undo a sort?

Yes. Undo restores the last sort action.

Does it work without an internet connection?

Yes. Everything runs locally from EXIF data.

Bring order to your photo library.
