How AI culling saves wedding photographers time

A wedding shoot produces 3,000 to 5,000 photos. Going through them manually takes hours — often days. AI culling doesn't replace your judgement, but it removes the boring parts: finding the shots that are clearly unusable, grouping similar frames, and highlighting the ones that deserve a closer look.

The problem with manual culling

A single wedding produces 3,000 to 5,000 photos. Manually reviewing them all takes 8 to 12 hours. Eyes get tired, decisions become inconsistent between the start and the end of the session, and the creative time that could go into editing is instead spent scrolling through near-identical frames.

What AI culling actually does

The technical helpers

  1. Sharpness Detection — Laplacian, Tenengrad, and edge density measured in the eye region.
  2. Face Detection — an OpenCV Haar cascade that finds faces.
  3. Eye Sharpness — sharpness measured specifically in the eye area.
  4. Blink Detection — the OCEC model (Open Eyes Closed Eyes Classification).
  5. Emotion Detection — FER+ with 7 classes: happy, sad, angry, neutral, and more.
  6. Series Grouping — timestamp clustering with a 2-second tolerance.
  7. Composition Score — rule-of-thirds and symmetry.

What AI can't do

AI cannot spot the one perfect moment that only you saw through the viewfinder. It cannot judge the emotional value of an image, understand a couple's style, or make the creative decisions that define your work. That is exactly why the AI suggests and you decide — the two roles stay separate.

A realistic workflow

  1. Import — the Sorter organises everything by date and camera.
  2. CullMaster analyses all images, at roughly 1–2 seconds per photo.
  3. Series are grouped, with the top 3 per series highlighted.
  4. You walk the series and rate with 1–5 stars.
  5. Auto-Select marks the best X%.
  6. Export the selection and move to final editing.

Time savings (realistic)

Without AI, a wedding cull takes 8 to 12 hours. With AI, it takes 2 to 4 hours, because you decide faster with the unusable shots already removed and the strong candidates already surfaced. It is not magic — but it is a real time saving that goes straight back into editing and shooting.
